-What is Face Changing?-
Face changing is a traditional performance technique originally used in Sichuan Opera, a classic form of Chinese drama from Sichuan Province. In this art form, actors convey a character's emotions through rapid and dramatic changes in facial expression. The masks used in the performance represent various Chinese deities, historical figures, or animals, each symbolizing a distinct emotional state or persona.
Due to its mysterious and captivating nature, face changing has evolved into a distinct performing art known as the "Face Changing Show." This art form has traditionally been regarded as a closely guarded secret, originally passed down from father to son, and was once considered a state secret. In 2006, Sichuan Opera was inscribed on the List of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage.

A face-changing artist performs rapid mask changes during the performance, sometimes even stepping offstage to change his face right in front of the audience. His vibrant and dynamic performances captivate and thrill the audience.
